I FUCKING LOVE PSYCHONAUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the world of Psychonauts.

Psychonauts is, as described earlier, a game where you play as Razputin Aquato, a psychic who runs away from the circus he calls home and to a summer camp meant for young psychic minds. He becomes a psychonaut in training (which are referred to as psycadets)-

But, hold on, what is a psychonaut?

A psychonaut is a psychic spy that explores the minds of other people - usually to aquire important information. Every person's mind looks different - for example, Sasha Nein's is a minimalistic cube, Milla Vodello's is a dance party, so on and so forth.

I've described the plot in the first page already, so onto my thoughts on the game.

I'm gonna cut right to the chase - Psychonauts is one of the best, if not the best video game I've ever played. Actually, scratch that - Psychonauts IS the best video game I've ever played. I'm not finished with it yet, but holy fucking shit it's genuinely such a wonderful, wacky, zany, fun game.

The visuals are so zany, so wacky... the artstyle is so unique, I've never seen anything like it. Oh yeah, did I mention that the mindscapes are really fucking creative and imaginitive? I know I've mentioned before, but you have got to look at them, holy shit. Here's Milla's for example. Also, the developers put genuine, actual effort to make each and every one of them different from eachother. Here's Sasha's for comparison. I could go on and on, however this entire section would just be about how gorgeous the mindscapes are.

The gameplay itself is nothing like I've ever seen - I mean, yea, sure, it gives you the ability to punch, jump, and shoot, but one of the main selling points is the various psychic abilities you can earn in the form of merit badges. Telekinesis, pyrokinesis, invisibility, shield... Each merit badge is unique in its own way.

Continuing on that, the merit badges are genuinely the most unique gameplay mechanics I've ever seen. The levitation is my favorite, I think. Not only is it fun to use, but I really like how it looks. It resembles the thought bubble that appears when you open your inventory, which I think is a really cool touch. Also, I'm personally biased since Milla's mindscape is my favorite level, and that's where you earn the levitation merit badge.

Oh, god, don't even get me started on the characters. They're all so unique in their own distinct ways - from their designs, to their personalities, to basically their everything. You can tell so much about them just by looking at them; let alone going into their mindscapes. I mean, look at the videos linked in one of the first paragraphs! There's a diverse section for players to choose their favorites - I like all of them thus far, however my mind has decided to grip onto Sasha Nein. If you know me, you know that I'm a sucker for German butches. The G in LGBT stands for German, and there's a reason why the L is right next to G, after all (I'm joking, don't worry).

In general, like I said, this is the best game I've ever played. No game could ever compare, I think - and that might not be saying a lot, since I don't play games often, but still. It's so up my alley that I simply can't resist! Exploration of the human psyche with a crazy plot and a zany artstyle? Sign me the hell up!

That said, please play Psychonauts please please please plea

I discovered this game when a very close friend on Tumblr started hyperfixating on it around... I think somewhere in December of 2021? Yeah, let's say December of 2021. It surprisingly took me excessively long to get into Psychonauts, as usually I don't have the patience to get into video games, merely because I'm more of a hands-on kinda guy, so my only form of getting into it was by watching a gameplay. Of course, I never finished, because I have low attention span for gameplays.

That is, until a few weeks ago, when my dad got an Xbox X. He got a gamepass as well, and both Psychonauts games were on it! I'd been meaning to get into Psychonauts for a while, so I asked my dad if we could download it, and he did. When it finally finished installing, I booted it up, excited to finally dig into this wacky, zany game.

Of course, I was unaware of the effect this game would have on my life.

It's only been a few weeks since I first got into this game, but jesus the effect it has had on me thus far is CRAZY. I've been so much happier lately, and this is genuinely one of the healthiest hyperfixations I've ever had. It's so up my alley, too - it literally checks off all of my criteria for an absolutely perfect media! Large cast of characters that are all enjoyable in their own way? Check! Awesome artstyle? Check! Fun writing? Check! Good humor? Check! Creativity? CHECK!!!!!!!!!!! This game is so, so perfect to me, and I'm so glad I got into it.

Already I've made friends with a lot of people within the fandom, and they're all so, so nice! Some of my closest friends ever, even. Shout out to Billy, Roger, and Martin - you guys are the OGs!
